International secondments or contract accounting roles in Bermuda have become increasingly popular, as newly- or recently-qualified accountants in particular, realise the benefits of gaining valuable overseas work experience whilst also enjoying a fresh new culture and lifestyle.
A typical contract is generally two years, though it is possible – and indeed quite probable – that you might decide to extend your stay longer once you have sampled the enhanced work/lifestyle on the Island.
The benefits of an overseas placement are numerous, including presenting the opportunity to explore a new part of the world, save more due to the absence of income tax, and develop your career simultaneously.
But that is not all.
Secondments offer the chance of a fast track to responsibility, flexible contracts and frequently a guaranteed permanent placement afterwards. Usefully, they also enable you to get experience of a range of different companies in different sectors – convenient if you like to ‘try before you buy’ and are not yet sure in which sector lies your future.
You will stretch yourself in this new environment to enhance your communication skills, cultural awareness, and leadership and influencing skills.
A secondment or contracting role abroad can also improve your future career chances by enhancing your CV. As well as the huge personal development (improved confidence) and specific accounting international experience gained, it demonstrates flexibility and adaptability plus the opportunity to build your own international network of professional contacts.
Fortunately, as a result of the recent economic climate, it has become more common for employers to offer secondments to work on projects as they can be a more affordable and practical option, where resources are tight or where the need for a permanent hire is not yet know. A permanent job or a contracting position? It’s up to you.
