The Bermuda market

Bermuda is a leader in offshore risk financing and well known internationally as a global centre of insurance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the population of Hamilton has the highest proportion of actuaries per capita in the world.

The Island has traditionally been dominated by non-Life actuaries, though in recent years there has been an upsurge in demand for Life actuaries.

The Life sector – which provides global coverage of life, annuity and pension products – today represents a significant portion of Bermuda’s market, with numerous registered Life Re/Insurance companies deriving their business from Europe, the United States and Asia.

In fact, the long-term insurance sector in Bermuda has now overtaken both P&C and Captives, and holds over US$300billion in assets.

With an ageing global population, the demand for life products (including pensions and retirement products), is high. And large amounts of capital continue to be invested in this sector as investors consider life insurance and annuities to be a stable source of earnings.
